Spoleto

It has been inhabited since Pre- historic times. During the Iron Age. Spoleto was one of the most imortant Umbri cities in a dominant position in the Umbri valley. In.1156, Spoleto ” very armed and defended by a hundred towers” was destroyed by Federico Barbarossa according to history chronicles.
During the French invasion in the Napoleonic times, Spoleto was headquarters firstly to the Clitunno department and then to the Transimeno department because of the proximity to the mountain areas bordering the Kingdom of Naples which made patrol of the territory easier but exposure to the risk of banditry increased.
On September 17, 1860, the Piemontese general’s soldiers, Phillip Brignone, conquered Spoleto and claimed it from the papal state. With a motion which took place on November 4, 1860, and which was followed by Marche and Umbria, Spoleto was annexed to the Italian Kingdom. With the following adjoinment of Sabine to the Latium region and the promotion of Terni to capital of the province in 1927, Spoleto permanently lost its’ political – executive rule of Southern Umbria.
