Todi

It was founded between the eigth and the seventh century B.C. by the Umbri on a hill located on the left shore of the Tevere River at 400 meters above sea level and at a short distance from the Etruscan territory with the name of Tutere, which means ” border city”.
In the twelfth century, the city underwent a new expansion from the Alvian Castle in the South towards the Ammeto Plain near Marsciano in the North and from the synclivial of the Martani mountains to the East of the Forrello gorges which overlook the Tevere River in the West. The modern Todi is almost alike to the Medieval one, as shown in a 1633 portrait byJames Lauro.
The borders are traced by the walls. Todi is also known for having born Jacopone de Benedetti ( better known as Jacopone of Todi ) the two century poet who composed historical lauds such as ” O Lord, please”.
